BJP would not cooperate with Sri Krishna Committee

Former BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu today said the party would not cooperate with the Srikrishna Committee, appointed by the Centre to look into the issue of a separate Telangana state as it has ‘no sanctity and legality.’

Addressing a press conference along with Andhra Pradesh unit BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya here, Mr Naidu said ‘it is a farce. There is no use of thisCommittee. It is a futile exercise and waste of expenditure on the Committee as it has no legality to take a decision.’ Mr Naidu said though he was not blaming the members of the Committee, there was no point in appointing retired individuals as members in the Committee.

Alleging that the UPA-led Congress government had not taken the Telangana issue seriously, he said the government’s main intention was to dragthe issue without taking any clear cut decision and divert the attention of the people.

‘Can the UPA government say they will implement the recommendations of the Srikrishna Committee report,’ he questioned.

‘Telangana issue is a political issue and the Congress government has to take a political decision and spell out the stand on Telangana as it had already promised in the election manifesto along with Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in the 2004 elections the creation of Telangana state. There was no use of appointing committees instead of taking a political decision,’ he said.

Asked about the resignations of legislators in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, the former BJP President said it was part of peoples’ agitation to bring pressure on the government to achieve their demand.

There would be a big impact on the government if a majority of the legislators and Parliament members submit their resignations, he said.

To a question, Mr Naidu said the BJP would not contest the by-elections caused by the resignations of TRS MLAs and lone BJP MLA to protest against the ‘unfavourable’ Terms of Reference for Srikrishna Committee.
