Telangana bypolls a test for Naidu’s “two eyes” theory.

The forthcoming by-elections to 12 Assembly seats in Telangana will be a litmus test to TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s `two eyes’ theory. This was the first election after Naidu changed his tack and  announced that Telangana and Andhra were like two eyes to him.

TDP fought the last Assembly election stating that it was in favour of a separate Telangana. TDP, in a bid to capture power, forged an alliance with the TRS. The alliance could not make it to the cradle of power. Naidu made a U-turn after the Union Home Minister’s statement that the process of Telangana would be started. Naidu then coined a new slogan `two-eyes theory’.

Even Justice BN Srikrishna said: “Naidu presented a graphic version of his two-eyes theory to the committee,’’  when the committee met TDP chief  over dinner at Raj Bhavan.

It was Naidu, who decided to field party candidates in the by-elections, which  was opposed by many senior leaders from Telangana. According to sources, Naidu was confident that the Telangana TDP Forum, which was floated by the party,  will fight for a separate Telangana. Naidu wanted the leaders to take this message to the people that the TDP was sincere in achieving  a separate state.

However, the ground realities are different in the region. Even Telangana TDP Forum convenor N Janardhan Reddy too was against the party contesting the  elections.

Party insiders said Naidu convinced the Telangana leaders on the by-elections and took up the responsibility to see that the TDP wrests some seats from  Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

Leaders like K Srihari, E Dayakar Rao and others were against fielding  candidates in the by-elections.

However, they could not speak openly against Naidu.

Naidu, according to sources, was of the opinion that the TDP was strong in all the segments where the by-elections are due, except Nizamabad Urban.

TDP leaders felt that TRS won the seats because of the support extended by

the TDP  in the last election. TDP leaders aver that the party had a strong  cadre base in Telangana and it could win some seats in the triangular contest.
