Doubts in Congress over PCC chief’s chances

Several Congress leaders are fearful of APCC president D Srinivas’ chances in the Nizamabad (Urban) constituency where he is up against the BJP’s Y Laxminarayana who enjoys the backing of the TRS and other Telangana organisations.

In an informal chat with mediapersons in the Assembly lobby, one of the ministers from Telangana pointed out that the APCC president after filing his papers took out a rally at great expense but the BJP candidate attracted vast numbers because of the support he enjoyed among the people since he had resigned for the cause of Telangana.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the minister said Srinivas’ supporters were underestimating the Telangana factor. Nor had they been able to convince the electorate that Srinivas, if elected would become either chief minister or deputy chief minister.

He said Congress cadres were playing the caste card but they were ignoring the fact that all caste organisations had already passed resolutions in support of Statehood.

Another Congress MLA also said the APCC president was facing a tough time from the BJP candidate who was supported by all the Telangana organisations.

Many other Congress legislators speaking in the Assembly lobbies echoed this view.

On the BJP front, veteran leader B Dattatreya is camping in Nizamabad and supervising the campaign. TRS leader K Kavita is also planning to turn up and lend her support.

She is to take up a door-to-door campaign in all 50 divisions in the city and has prepared an action plan to attract beedi workers. The TRS is also planning road shows to be addressed by party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao.
