Even as a 24-year-old youth from Nizamabad district, who attempted suicide two days ago, succumbed in a corporate hospital in the city today, another Telangana supporter ended his life in Nizamabad, a day ahead of byelections. The death of the youth belonging to the Sirikonda village in Nizamabad, Chakali Srinivas, led to tension in the city when police foiled pro-Telangana activists from taking out a procession with the body.
Though police said Srinivas took the extreme step due to family problems, Telangana supporters contended that Srinivas ended his life for Telangana. Srinivas set himself ablaze in his house on the night of July 24 and was shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Malakpet as he suffered 83 per cent burns. Srinivas was a BJP activist.
In his dying declaration, Srinivas said he was ending his life vexed with family disputes. “Srinivas was married and had a problem with his wife,” Sirikonda SI Babu said. But, there are allegations that the declaration has been changed by the government officials.
Srinivas, however, spoke to a couple of television channels saying that he was dying for the cause of Telangana. “People of the region can prosper only in separate Telangana. People should elect only those leaders who resigned for statehood to Telangana,” he told media.
Soon after his death, Telangana activists came to the hospital and picked up an altercation with the police alleging that they were trying to shift the body to an undisclosed location. Police pacified them and shifted the body to the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) for a post mortem.
Additional forces were rushed to OGH to control TRS leaders and Telangana activists who planned to take out a procession with the body to the Martyrs Memorial near the Assembly. Police, however, shifted the body from the rear exit of the mortuary.
Meanwhile, in Kota Galli in Nizamabad town, a gas cylinder delivery agent, A Satyanarayana (40), consumed pesticide and ended his life. He was said to be a BJP activist.
“Satyanarayana reportedly made his intentions clear to commit suicide to his wife, Bhoo Lakshmi, yesterday night. He was depressed that the BJP candidate Y Lakshminarayana might lose the election as his rival and PCC chief D Srinivas is spending huge amounts of money,” police said. He took his life when his wife was away this morning.
